Anna Nicole’s boyfriend and doctors charged

By Emma Sibbles  on Friday 13 March 2009

Anna Nicole Smith

More than two years after Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental drug overdose, her boyfriend Howard K Stern and two doctors were charged yesterday.

Stern, who also acted as her attorney, is charged alongside Sandeep Kapoor, 40, and Khristine Eroshevich, 61, with three felony counts of conspiracy and several other charges of fraudulent prescriptions.

The prescriptions were issued between June 2004 and January 2007. Smith died in February 2007.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown said, ‘These individuals repeatedly and excessively furnished thousands of prescription pills to Anna Nicole Smith, often for no legitimate medical purpose.’

The medical examiner’s office said that Eroshevich, an LA psychiatrist and friend of the former Playboy Playmate, authorised all the prescription medication found in the Florida hotel room where Smith was discovered.

Adam Braun, Eroshevich’s attorney admitted that his client had written some of the prescriptions using false names for Smith but said it was for privacy reasons, not fraud. He added that Eroshevich started treating Smith after the death of her son, Daniel, in September 2006, also from a drugs overdose.

Prosecutors allege that Kapoor gave Smith excessive amounts of sleep aids, opiates, muscle relaxants and drugs used to treat addiction.

After her death more than 600 pills were found to be missing from prescriptions just five weeks old.

Dannielynn, Smith’s daughter, has been named the sole heir of her estate and could inherit millions if the ongoing court battle over Smith’s late husband J Howard Marshall’s fortune concludes in her favour.
