Barack Obama announces plans for first 100 days

By Suzannah Ramsdale  on Monday 12 January 2009

Marie Claire news: Barack Obama

Barack Obama has announced his agenda for his first 100 days as President, in his most wide-ranging and detailed interview to date.

And the President-Elect is under no illusion as to the mountainous challenges that will face him once he is inaugurated next Tuesday (20 January).

As part of his unenviable 'to do' list, Obama promised to act immediately to settle the US economy and the crisis in the Middle East, he also vowed to engage with Iran, to battle terrorism and close Guantánamo Bay.

However, Obama did acknowledge that the closure of the controversial prison camp was unlikely to happen in his first 100 days in office.

'It is more difficult than I think a lot of people realise,' he told ABC's This Week.

'Part of the challenge is that you have a bunch of folks that have been detained, many of whom may be very dangerous, who have not been put on trial and some of the evidence against them may be tainted even though it's true.'

The soon-to-be-President also went on to say that forging a relationship with Iran would be a huge struggle.

'I think Iran is going to be one of our biggest challenges. They are pursuing a nuclear weapon that could potentially trigger a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.'
