Barack Obama Spider-Man comic appearance ahead of inauguration

Barack Obama, news, Marie Claire

Just when you thought Barack Obama had the whole world behind him as he prepares to take on the U.S. presidency, another character has stood up to support him: this time it’s Spider-Man.

Yes, that’s right, the President-Elect is set to appear in a special bonus story in a Spider-Man comic which sees the superhero save his life and Obama becomes one of his fans.

The story unfolds with Spidey’s oldest nemesis, the Chameleon, trying to stop Obama from being inaugurated as President. Peter Parker, Spider-Man’s alter ego happens to be covering the event as a photographer and manages to save the day.

As the story crescendos, Spider-Man confronts the villain saying: ‘Ya hear that, Chamelon?’ thwacking him in the face. ‘The President-Elect here just appointed me… secretary of shuttin’ you up.’

Addressing Obama, the superhero says: ‘This is your day, and I know it wouldn’t look good to be seen palling around with me’ (a dig at Sarah Palin’s comment that Obama had been ‘palling around with terrorists’).

The appearance on the comic book cover must be something of a thrill for the future President, who admitted as a child that he collected Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian comic books.

Editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, Joe Quesada, joked about Obama’s love of comic books saying: ‘How great is that? The commander-in-chief to be is actually a nerd-in-chief. It was really, really cool to see that we had a geek in the White House. We’re all thrilled with that.’
