Cold snap sees temperatures dip to -12C

Last night was the coldest yet of the current winter freeze with temperatures falling as low as -12C (10.4F) in southern England.

The icy spell hit areas of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, taking temperatures to a new low of -12C in Benson and Chesham.

Many of us awoke to snowy scenes this morning, with flurries moving south from Yorkshire and the Humber, leaving transport chaos as drivers braved the dangerous conditions.

Meanwhile the cold snap even hit central London where icey conditions saw the fountains in Trafalgar Square freeze over – the same also occurred at Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens.

With frozen fields seeing villagers don their skates in St Ives, UK temperatures have rivalled some of the coldest areas in the world including Iceland, 6C, Greenland, 8C and the Antarctic, yes, the Antarctic, which registered at 3C on thermometers yesterday.

The Met Office said: ‘The monthly forecast is for below average temperatures across the UK. It does not look like it will warm up for some time. We could see temperatures of -10c again this month.’

In the short-term, however, forecasters predict temperatures will ease off over the weekend – to 8C – not exactly time to start peeling off the layers then.
