French MP returns to work after 1 week maternity leave

The French justice minister, Rachida Dati, who gave birth last Friday, is set to return to work this week, after less than a week’s maternity leave.

While most of us take the statutory six months (or more), 43-year-old Miss Dati has indicated she intends to return to work almost immediately, following her caesarian section and the birth of her baby girl, Zohra.

Advisers in the French government say they ‘won’t be surprised’ if they see Miss Dati back in the office by Wednesday this week.

The super-glam Muslim minister is apparently already ‘following the affairs of the ministry’ from her maternity bed at the clinic where she gave birth, according to one government spokesman and insisted she would take no more than a week’s maternity leave.

Officials in government predict Miss Dati will attend an informal cabinet meeting on Wednesday and follow up by listening to President Nicolas Sarkozy’s New Year address to France’s highest court.

Despite Miss Dati’s very public maternity leave plans, the justice minister has remained tight-lipped about the identity of the baby’s father. Speculation has been rife with possibles including a French millionaire and hotel and casino baron, and the former prime minister of another European country…
