Whittard next high street chain to close

By Carla Bevan  on Tuesday 23 December 2008

Whittard looks to be the next high street chain killed off by the credit crunch.

The tea and coffee specialists are believed to be close to calling in administrators as they struggle to find a buyer.

With 130 stores across the UK, the brand's brightly coloured window displays of painted crockery have become a signature of high streets up and down the country, however, if a new owner cannot be found, Ernst and Young are already lined up to come in and act as administrators.

However, a source who spoke to the BBC remained optimistic all was not yet lost, explaining: 'Whittard is still trading and it has not filed for administration yet. It's still talking to potential buyers.'
