JK Rowling book is fastest-selling of 2008

Marie Claire news: JK Rowling Rex Features

JK Rowling's latest book, The Tale of Beedle the Bard, has become the fastest-selling book of the year.

The newest offering from the Harry Potter author has flown off the shelves, selling fives times more than its closest rival, Guinness World Records 2008, despite being on sale for just three days.

According to book sales analyst Nielsen BookScan, Guinness World Records sold 73,236 copies whilst almost 368,000 copies of the Harry Potter spin-off were sold last week alone.

The sales may not be of the same magnitude as JK Rowling's last offering, the Deathly Hallows, which sold a whopping three million in the first weekend, but it is still expected to be the Christmas number one.

'None of the other big releases managed to get near the sales figure for Beedle the Bard,' Philip Stone, charts editor at The Bookseller magazine, told the Telegraph.

He added, 'I would be very surprised if it is not Christmas number one, but it's not a dead cert.'

The Tale of Beedle the Bard is a collection of short stories and the net proceeds will go to Rowling's charity for eastern European children.
