Sorry you're too old: Group of over-35s refused entry to bar
A city-centre bar left a group of friends humiliated after they were refused entry for being too old.
Staff at The Courtyard Bar in Leeds said the women could not pop in for a cheeky drink because they were over-35.
To add insult to injury the bouncers told the group, who were out having a reunion party, that although they were too old, their daughters were welcome.
The party of mates, which included teachers, civil servants and a police officer, had been for a catch-up meal and hoped to finish the night off with a few cocktails at the bar.
Carol Borthwick, who had organised the get-together was left mortified.
'At about 9.15pm it was decided we would move on and have a drink in the Courtyard Bar and made our way across the road,' the 62-year-old told the Daily Mail.
'On arrival we were greeted by door staff who asked us our ages. Obviously we thought they were joking and, smiling, we made to go in.'
'We gradually realised that, far from joking, they were deadly earnest and told the mums of the group that we were too old to come in.'
‘They said that nobody over the age of 35 was admitted. Our daughters could come in but not the mums.'
She added, 'I have never been so humiliated. It ruined what had started out as a wonderful evening.'
A spokesman for the bar's owners, Mitchells & Bulmers said, 'The Courtyard is enjoyed by customers of all ages. We are committed to treating our customers equally and fairly and do not tolerate discrimination in any form, whether in terms of age or otherwise.'
‘We have now been contacted directly by members of the group concerned and are currently fully investigating the matter.'
