Bacon-flavoured chocolate bar flies off the shelves
By Suzannah Ramsdale on Monday 24 November 2008
As Britain is a nation of chocolate lovers it came as no surprise to us that a new luxury chocolate bar was flying off the shelves at Selfridges' around the country, but we certainly weren't expecting it to be bacon-flavoured!
The weird and wonderful Mo's Bacon Bar is made from the unlikely combination of chunks of applewood smoked bacon with smoked salt and milk chocolate.
Hitting shelves at £5.99 for a 3oz bar, it's hardly a cheap snack, but that hasn't stopped Selfridges, the only UK stockist, selling out of the sweet and savoury nibble in under 48 hours.
'Bacon and chocolate sounds like a strange combination,' admits Ewan Venters, food and restaurant director at Selfridges. 'But the execution is fantastic.'
'It's a real explosion of flavours and people love it,' he added. 'There has been a real revolution in luxury chocolate, as there was with wine a few years ago. People are much more knowledgeable about it and there is a growing demand for these high quality, exotic products instead of a box of Milk Tray.'
The manufacturer, Vosges Haut-Chocolat, also sells other peculiar flavours including: chocolate with mushrooms and peanut butter, sweet Indian curry and chocolate and Mexican ancho and chipotle chillies with chocolate.
Selfridges has made an urgent order for more of the unusual goodies, so if a bacon chocolate bar ends up in your stocking this Christmas, don't say we didn't warn you!
