WARNING: Pregnancy ruins love life!

By Suzannah Ramsdale  on Wednesday 19 November 2008

Marie Claire world: pregnancy

Pregnancy has dire consequences for your sex life, resulting in expectant couples having half as much nookie, according to new research.

Stretch marks, feeling like a beached whale and concern for the unborn baby's health all add up to a waning love life, with more than four in ten women finding it impossible to get 'in the mood'.

The survey revealed that one in ten women went without a much-needed booty call for the whole nine months, whilst 20% abstained after six months.

Rather than being turned off by their expanding partner, as most women presumed, many men were worried about harming the baby, in fact, a quarter were terrified they would hit the baby's head (ahem, they must think a lot of themselves!).

'It's an awkward situation for any couple because the woman is going through huge hormonal changes and physical discomfort, while the man experiences no change whatsoever,' says Kathryn Crawford, spokeswoman for www.TheBabyWebsite.com who conducted the poll.

'This immediately creates a new imbalance in the relationship.'

Things don't improve once the tot has been born either. More than half of new mums felt their sex lives needed some severe spicing up, whilst two thirds said their saggy tummy and newly acquired varicose veins made them feel less yummy mummy and more slummy mummy.

In my experience it was 'More sex please, I'm pregnant' but I'm sure the hormones effect everyone differently.

I read with interest your article pregnancy ruins love life. I am a midwife and run private, luxury antenatal classes in Cheshire. We encourage partners to support and comfort their partners during pregnancy with demonstrations of massage techniques and practical advice. There is time out for a pamper session for mother where she can relax and feel special and fathers are shown hands on techniques looking after baby in the early days. Pregnancy doesn't have to be "a nine month slog" there is a chance of some indulgent time together with offers available for antenatal weekend packages in smart hotels.
