West End shows to run on Sundays

Marie Claire News: West End

West End theatres may soon start showing performances on Sundays, as actors are about to strike an historic deal with the theatre industry.

Some theatres are already running shows on Sundays, but this is after separate negotiations between individual theatres and Equity, the actors’ union.

The new deal under offer between the Society of London Theatres (Solt) and Equity will see an increase in the minimum wage for members of West End productions from £416 to £600 a week.

The pay rise is in return for a number of concessions including Sunday openings.

Negotiations over the four-year deal have been difficult and, at times, close to collapse, but Equity has recommended that its members accepts the offer from Solt, reported The Stage newspaper.

The majority of West End cast members are poorly paid and often have to take second jobs to support themselves. A survey in 2006 found nearly half earn less than £6,000 a year from acting.

Consultation with Equity members on the new deal is expected to finish next week.
