Conwoman swindles £400,000 of luxury goods

Marie Claire World News:Diamond and platinum earrings

A conwoman posing as a rich client stole £400,000-worth of jewellery, antiques and art in Paris, a court heard yesterday.

Shahra Marsh, 52, used her charm to fool the city’s auction houses into handing over sculptures, paintings, French heirlooms and numerous pieces of gold and diamond jewellery before her cheques bounced.

The nine firms involved were apparently fooled by her fluent French and wide knowledge of art and antiques, The Guardian reports.

On one occasion, a member of staff from the auctioneers Giafferi was persuaded to deliver a diamond ring, brooch and necklace and a gold bracelet and pendant in person to Marsh as she waited at the Eurostar terminal in Waterloo.

Her cheque later bounced. A police investigation found her hoard of luxury items – which included Louis Vuitton luggage, Hermes handbags and a Hermes clock and antique furniture – in a storage unit in central London.

Marsh denies 23 counts relating to obtaining goods by deception. The trial at Southwark crown court in London continues.
