Princess Diana wedding cake for sale

Marie Claire World News: Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake

A slice of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake is to be auctioned off.

We've heard of saving wedding cake until the birth of your first child, but this takes the biscuit; their wedding cake is 27 years old and surely a little on the stale side?

Apparently not according to auctioneer and royal memorabilia specialist Chris Albury: 'The decorative sugar icing of the royal coat of arms on top of the cake is very skilled and while there is some cracking and damage it is in remarkably good condition.'

The 9-inch square slice of cake icing and marzipan weighs 800 grams and was given to a servant at Clarence House, Moyra Smith, by a royal chef in 1981.

Now, the late Moyra's family have offered up the unusual delicacy for auction, along with a signed thank you letter from Charles and Diana to Mrs Smith and the items are expected to fetch a whopping £2,000 at auction.

This could become a regular feature among auction houses; according to Chris Albury, twenty-three wedding cakes were officially made for the royal nuptials. 'Whoever buys it will no doubt keep it for posterity – as an investment you can't both have your cake and eat it!'
