Britain third in Olympics
By Carla Bevan on Monday 18 August 2008
Britain is celebrating its best performance in modern Olympic history after a weekend of success pushed the nation up to third in the medals table.
British competitors won five gold and two silver medals in the competition's sailing, rowing and cycling events, as well as a surprise bronze in the men's gymnastics.
The wins brought the team's collections of gold medals to 11 and its total count to 25, putting Britain in third place in the medals table behind only China and the United States.
If the indoor track cycling team, which has won four gold medals since Friday night, continues its form, Britain will be on its way to exceeding the 15 golds won at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp.

So proud of the British Olympic team...I live in Australia and the Aussies aren't happy! The recent British wins in the cycling have hardly been mentioned and when we win the country is not even mentioned! So typical! I did get on radio today to point this out and say how proud I am to be a Pom in this country! Aussies need to be better sports and congratulate their biggest rivals in the world! Keep it up guys!
