The Dark Knight smashes box office records

The most-anticipated film of the year has smashed the previous record set by last year's Spiderman 3 and taken over $155 million in its first three days.

The sequel from British filmmaker Christopher Nolan attracted sell-out audiences across America with round-the-clock screenings being hosted from midnight on Thursday to accommodate the crowds - some of whom proved their true fan status by dressing up as characters from the film.
The movie, which co-stars the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, could now be set to become the most profitable comic book adaptation ever, proving the popularity of the genre and the desire for film studios to latch onto comic strips to secure box office success.
Ledger died following a drug overdose in January at the age of 28. Some supporters of the movie have been so impressed by his performance suggestions have been made he be given a posthumous Oscar nomination.
Dan Fellman, the head of Warner Bros distribution commented: 'We have been thrilled by the response to The Dark Knight, first from critics and now from audiences.'
