Ingrid Betancourt, the French-Colombian politician who was rescued last week after being held hostage in the Colombian jungle for six years, has said she is fearful of the depression she knows is coming.

The former Colombian presidential candidate has spoken candidly of her susceptibility and her Catholic faith, following the action film-style rescue by the Colombian military last week.

Ms Betancourt told the New York Times: 'Six days ago I was chained to a tree. And I'm now free, and I'm trying to understand how I'm going to live from now on.'

The 46-year-old also used her interview time with the international press to call upon the release of the hundreds of hostages still held captive by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

'Now is the time to think about others that are still living that ordeal,' she told the BBC. Ms Betancourt declined to disclose details of her suffering when she was often chained and physically and mentally tortured.

In an emotional moment, Ms Betancourt said she intended to bear witness to her horrific ordeal in the jungle, 'but it has to come in the right moment. I need time'.

Ingrid: God will keep you emotionally stable. You have instilled admiration in many U.S. citizens. The same God who brought you out of the jungle will keep you safe....you clearly have a mission. God bless!
