Orange Prize announced

Orange Prize Winner RoseTreamain

Rose Tremain has won the Orange Broadband prize for women's fiction, for her novel The Road Home, a tale of an Eastern European immigrant in Britain.

The £30,000 prize has been a long time coming for the celebrated author, as despite her status as one of Britain's best selling novelists, she has never won a major literary prize.

She expressed her surprise during her acceptance speech at last night's ceremony, where she commented, 'I would have spent more time perfecting my speech instead of my loser's smile.'

The Road Home follows the story of an Eastern European immigrant, Lev, who travels to Britain following the death of his wife. It is Tremain's tenth novel, and was the favourite for the prestigious award.

Treamain has been nominated or the Orange prize once before, in 2004 for her novel The Colour.

The five shortlisted authors for this year's award were Heather O'Neill for Lullabies for Little Criminals; Patricia Wood for Lottery; Nancy Huston for Fault Lines; Charlotte Mendelson for When We Were Bad and Sadie Jones for The Outcast.
