Cat-dropping coffee

Marie Claire health news: Coffee

Would you pay £50 for a cup of coffee? Would you pay £50 for a cup of coffee made from cat droppings? Well, the people at Peter Jones department store hope you will, because they've just put the aforementioned item on sale at their London store.

De'Longhi Caffé Raro, which will be sold for £50 a cup at Peter Jones, is made from a blend of the rare Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans and the Kopi Luwak bean, which is first digested by palm civits - a cross between a cat and monkey - before being collected by plantation workers in Indonesia and sold as Luwak coffee.

'De'Longhi's Caffé Rarois an extremely exciting coffee and a first for the UK - if not the world,' says the creator of the drink, David Cooper.

'These two incredibly rare coffees have never been blended before and the result is a very rich and full tasting espresso. These coffees have been slowly hand roasted for around 12 minutes to ensure that we maximise the potential of each coffee. The final roast colour is quite dark to ensure that the espresso is perfect for a smooth latte or cappuccino.'

'Over the last 10 years demand for new and increasingly sophisticated coffees has been on the rise. We're finding that consumers are becoming more aware of premium coffee,' adds Giovanni Toffano, marketing manager of De'Longhi UK.

The £50 cups will be available from the Sloane Street Peter Jones Espresso Bar and Brasserie in London throughout April will all proceeds from the sale of the coffee being donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

I am a bit of a coffee snob, don't do instant and believe you pay for what you get. £50 is quite excessive, however I wouldn't mind trying a free sample!

I honestly thought that the above was an April fool - except it's not April 1st...

The proceeds are going to a very worthy cause, but anyone who will pay £50 for a cup of coffee, regardless of the brand, has more money than sense.

Saw this in the film 'The Bucket List', wondered how long it would be before someone brought it here from the USA.

If anyone one paid £50 for a coffee should be section under the mental health act.

With some people you just tell them it cost this much so it must be worth it and it works.

Never heard of civits - did a search and found an article that a while back palm civits were being culled in China because they had found that they could carry SARS.

I guess if you look at it as a straight donation to a brilliant charity, it's money well spent. Other than that, anyone who'd cough up £50 for a cup of coffee has serious mental health problems ;-)

Get over it already. This story is years old. Do we have to recycle everything from 2003 episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show?
Comment by NotThisAgain on April 10 17:20

Mmmmmmm..£50 for roast cat s***. Think I'd rather pass and just donate the money! I'm sure there will be those who feel the need to prove their credentials by buying the stuff though.
