How to get into ...

George Clooney at Downing Street

George Clooney

It can't have escaped anyone's attention that George Clooney is currently on British turf, doing the rounds to promote his latest movie, Leatherheads.

What may come as something of a surprise is that Mr Clooney spent yesterday morning down at Downing Street with Prime Minister Gordon Brown to discuss the current crisis in the Sudanese region of Darfur.

Speaking at a press conference at London's Dorchester Hotel, Clooney - who is a UN 'messenger of peace' - revealed Mr Brown had a 'wonderful suggestion' to lease or buy helicopters to transport UN soldiers around the African region, in order to protect civilians effectively. Currently the soldiers are stuck in 'pockets' of land and unable to do their jobs properly.

Clooney revealed: 'Mr Brown was amazingly helpful. He suggested that London could be a place for rebel leaders from Darfur to meet, and has followed through by immediately contacting the French for funding.

'The bottom line is we have a chance now to resurrect the idea of getting the rebel leaders together and talking. There have been great steps made today, it's really encouraging.'

The European premiere of period football comedy Leatherheads took place tonight in London's Leicester Square where Clooney was accompanied by his co-star and close friend, Renée Zellweger.
