The importance of names
Mark Abrahams
Do you think you're attractive? More importantly, do others? Well, it's not necessarily all down to how you look. In fact, it could be as simple as your name.
Scientists have discovered that both men and women make far-reaching assumptions about others just on hearing their Christian name.
Sophies and Rachels, for instance, are instantly considered attractive, while Carolines and Helens are judged successful and that's all before we've even clapped eyes on them.
'Traditional names with royal associations are viewed as highly successful and intelligent, and so parents hoping for successful offspring might want to avoid more unusual names,' explains Professor Richard Wiseman of Hertfordshire University, who led the 7,000-person study.
'Attractive female names tended to be soft-sounding and end with the 'ee' sound, whereas the sexiest male names are short and much harder sounding.'
