Money issues slow divorce rate

Couple

The divorce rate might continue to rise, but many couples say they stay in unhappy marriages simply because they can't afford to separate.

In a survey of 2,000 married couples, more than half said they weren't happy in their marriage, with many having considered divorce, but 29% said they stayed married to avoid financial upheaval.

'It's so easy for married couples to get stuck in a rut once the realities of paying the bills and getting the children's breakfast sets in,' a spokesperson for Relate comments.

'Relationships inevitably change over time. Couples who address their problems and talk to each other when they feel they may be taken for granted, stand a better chance of pulling through.'

The survey was commissioned by Seddons solicitors after the firm received a deluge of divorce applications following the Christmas and New Year holidays.

However, along with the issue of financial security, children also remained a key factor in many couples' decision to stay together.
