Gerry McCann speaks out

Kate and Gerry McCann

Gerry McCann has admitted that he blames himself for daughter Madeleine's disappearance, and that he now believes the chances that he will ever see her again are slim.

In a heartfelt interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Mr McCann spoke of his guilt after Madeleine disappeared in May, commenting 'I wish I hadn't gone to the tapas bar….Of course we feel guilty about not having been there and that is just something we have to deal with for the rest of our lives. We live this 24 hours a day.'

Mr McCann spoke to the magazine in October without wife Kate, in exchange for a donation to the Find Madeleine appeal. The McCann's friends and family are also interviewed for the piece, as is suspect Robert Murat.

Mr McCann reveals for the first time that he thinks it is unlikely that they will ever get Madeline back. He told the magazine, 'I know now that, probably, the chances of getting Madeleine back are slim.'

He added though that the couple will never give up hope, 'You might never see her again. But still you have the hope. Still.'

Although the interview is one of the most revealing that the McCann's have given to date, Mr McCann did add that he is still unable to comment on the investigation due to Portugese secrecy laws. He told the magazine, 'I can't talk to you about the details of what happened. I live under threat from the Portuguese - if I do talk - of two years' imprisonment.'

Of course it was wrong to leave three such young children out of sight and out of earshot - not because they might be abducted (the most unlikely possibility) but because they could have fallen out of bed, woken up frightened, even wandered off. This must be hard for the McCanns to bear, but what must be almost as bad is the knowledge that had the local police followed what we would regard as normal procedure and acted with even half the competence one would expect from our police there might have been a happier outcome - or at least they would know what had happened to Madeleine rather than having to live the rest of their lives not knowing as seems likely. And has anyone thought about the affect all this is going to have on the twins?

I just wish someone would find her - it must be agonising not to know where she is. Surely someone knows where she is. I hope everyone keeps looking - please don't give up.

These people are vile! They left their daughter and her siblings to go out and enjoy themselves and now want money to 'find' her - get back to Portugal, answer the questions you have so far refused to answer and actually do something rather than employing Clarence Mitchell and co

I agree with Gill Smith, someone must know where Madeline is. For the sake of all concerned and Madeline herself - please whoever you are examine your conscience and restore Madeline to her family.
