Slumdog makers donate to Indian charity

Slumdog filmmakers donate cash to Indian children's charity

The team behind the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire have announced they will donate £500,000 to children’s charity Plan India.

The donation will support a slum community located in central Mumbai and will focus on early childhood care, education, and health, water & sanitation and child protection. It hopes to reach over 2,000 families and 5,000 children.

Plan is a child-centered development organisation that has worked to improve the lives of children in India for 30 years.

The cast and crew of Slumdog Millionaire were linked with Plan India when Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor donated his fees from the film to the charity. The film crew attended a charity dinner and art auction hosted by Kapoor.

Director Danny Boyle said, ‘Slumdog Millionaire‘s success is to support the underprivileged children of Mumbai. Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai it is only right that some of the success of the movie be put back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference.’
