Can a model be too fat? Fashion ed Jess Wood joins the Kate Upton debate

By Jess Wood - Thursday 12 July 2012

Not content with slating unsuspecting celebrities daring to expose any visible evidence of – shudder – body fat (I mean, it's not like they need to keep warm with all that LA sunshine, is it?), pro-skinny sites have started to take long, thin stabs at models.

Skinny Gossip, a thin-spiration site written by an ex-model who takes personal pride in 'keeping myself very thin' (a purposeful life, then) has been causing furious Web waves with a vitriol-filled rant aimed at curvacious Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton.

Describing Upton's look at a recent runway show as 'thick, vulgar, almost pornographic' and like 'a squishy brick', the rant degenerates further – to include pictures of Upton actually (snigger) eating, and demanding: "Is this what American women are striving for now? The lazy, lardy look?"

To any un-ana-biased eye, Upton is toned, healthy and - most strikingly - happy looking. Something I doubt you could say about the author of Skinny Gossip (difficult to say for sure though, as strangely, the site is anonymous).

We'd say that's most definitely something for women everywhere to strive for.
