Making a Difference
P&G
Abigail Treffry tells us what a P&G award means to her island community of Barra.
Every mum faces challenges – but those on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides contend with more than most when it comes to entertaining their children. And Abigail Treffry, 38, who lives there with her husband, Ed, and their two children, Eva, five, and Seumas, three, knows that all too well.
‘Barra is stunning,’ says Abigail. ‘There are lots of beaches and kids have so much freedom. But during the winter, the weather prevents outdoor fun. Where do you take kids for an indoor treat if the nearest ice-cream parlour is a six-hour ferry ride away?’
That’s why the Barra Children’s Centre (where Abigail is on the board) is vital, but the facilities are old and worn. When Abigail read about the P&G Champion Mums’ Foundation awards, offering mums the chance to win a bursary to improve their lives, their family’s life or the local community, she thought it could be the answer.
‘The competition fitted with what we wanted to do. I was thrilled to discover we’d been successful!’
‘The community is so excited about the award,’ says Abigail, who explains that the centre is a key meeting place for everyone from new mums to babysitting grandparents.
The £5,000 bursary will help transform it by creating a kids’ café, complete with new toys, chalkboard walls and flooring. ‘At the moment the toys, which are all donated, are missing bits,’ she adds. ‘This is like a pat on the back for everyone who’s supported the centre for the past 10 years. It’s a real boost.’
P&G is committed to making mothers’ lives easier with trusted products like Max Factor, Venus and Shockwaves. That’s why it is a Proud Sponsor of Mums with its Champion Mums’ Foundation. Back in November, P&G and the publishers of Marie Claire decided to help some of the UK’s most fantastic mums by giving them a chance to win a share of the £150,000 P&G Champion Mums’ Foundation bursary awards.
