Dig out your old heels for ActionAid's HIV campaign
Every girl has countless pairs of shoes they've bought in a flustered flurry and later realised they don't fit, pinch their toes or could lead to a severe style calamity - in the form of a broken ankle.
If you have at least one pair of unwanted heels festering at the back of your wardrobe, there is one place they will be welcomed with open arms: ActionAid's Put Your Foot Down campaign.
The campaign aims to collect 2,876 shoes, one for every woman who contracts HIV across the world each day.
In a bid to highlight and take action against violence towards women who have subsequently been infected with the HIV virus, ActionAid will present the collected shoes to DFID (Department for International Development) on International Women's Day next March.
To put the problem into context, ActionAid reports that a girl born in South Africa has a higher chance of being raped than of learning to read. Furthermore, threats made against women in the country stop them from either refusing sex or insisting on using condoms.
The charity's symbolic gesture will not only underline the severity of the issue but also demonstrate the huge numbers of people who are willing to put their foot down to put an end to the spread of HIV.
We find it hard to believe, but if you simply don't have a shoe fetish and can't dig up a pair of heels for love nor money, there is another way you can make a stand by putting your name to the petition for the campaign against violence towards women here.
