Shopping the green way

Marie Claire Eco News: Coolaworld

If you love to shop - and who doesn't - but want to pledge your support to planet-saving projects as well, then new shopping portal, Coolaworld, could be the answer you've been looking for.

The portal is supported by leading environmental charities including Solar Aid, Waterwise and Waste Watch, and aims to raise billions of pounds for worldwide projects to halt global warming, using the same principle as Airmiles or Sainsbury's Nectar points. Whilst most rewards schemes hold unused rewards points back, 100% of Cool Credits will go to Cool Projects.

Whenever you make a purchase through one of the many retailers including The White Company, Currys, John Lewis, M&S and The Body Shop, you earn yourself Cool Credits. Your credits can either go towards Cool Projects or you can spend them on a selection of green products for yourself.

Richard Kilgarriff, co-founder of Coolaworld said of the new portal: 'Coolaworld makes it easy to do your bit for the planet while taking the first steps on your low-carbon journey. We can't all be green overnight, but we can cool what we do every day.'

Marie Claire's special Eco Chic issue with a free The Body Shop Body Butter and in association with Coolaworld, is out today.

What a breath of fresh air.

Well done to these cool people for having the guts to not only acknowledge that as people we always have to shop and for this mag for telling their story.

Look - I am a Hippy - Right. I still have to shop and the only person I know who does not shop is my gran who is no longer with us.

So why not do what I do and in the process do some good on the way.

The alternative is to shop anyway and NOT bother getting the big stores from which I shop to give a bit of the profit they make to charity.

It is a no brainer.

and look - if saving the world means NOT shopping at all then it is time we all join my grany in heaven.

Coolaworld's home page urges us to Shop & Save The Planet. Has it not yet occurred to anyone that shopping, ie consumption, is ideologically opposed to saving the planet. Shopping we like yes,and responsible eco/local/organic/fair trade shopping is to be encouraged, as you have done in much of your eco-chic Marie Claire edition which is good.......... but asking us to support Coolaworld, a shopping platform where you can buy any product, including environmentally damaging ones and which then gives us loyalty points to encourage more shopping, whilst claiming that shopping will save the planet, is just bizarre. Please don't treat your readers as if we are uninformed bimbos. Plus if you look at your own comments on Airmiles loyalty bonus schemes you'll see how ridiculous it is to say that Coolaworld will raise billions for charities. This is misinformation of your readers. In addition, if these charities were using www.charityshoppers.com they'd be getting far percentage greater returns from our same purchases and we'd be doing more good. Marie O'Riordan, you are usually a savvy, and intelligent woman, but in guiding your readers in this edition, to shop to save the planet on Coolaworld, you haven't done us or yourself justice. Also a little bit of research on google, would have led you to the same observations about Coolaworld on many of the eco websites. The rest of the edition is really great though, so credit where credit is due, very insightful, informative -especially the action heros, well done and thank you.

it's good that people are finally starting to recognise the need to change lifestyle, buying behaviour and use of products. Seems crazy though that my parents generation were doing just that; they didn't have endless amounts of junk and pacakaging to get rid of, shopping down the co-op with a basket, taking lemonade bottles back to the shop you bought them from to get the deposit back, make do and mend.
I know what the problem was - technology - microchips - gaming - and built in obsolescence. I feel guilty that it's my generation that's caused this and I think it's up to strong government initiatives to stop it.
For example, no more carrier bags in supermarkets - tough if you arrive to get your shopping without your own bags.
No to bags to put veg in until you get home and then throw it away - what is this waste all about.
Educate school children from an early age to think and act in a responsible way.
Take beauty products off the shelves that are manufactured with parabens and horrid toxic chemicals.
Just do it government - we'll still survive and probably in a better way.
Love this MarieClaire issue - its the best copy of a magazine I've read in years. Can you produce a monthly eco-supplement every month?
I'm a graphic designer, design technology teacher, give me the copy/ads etc. and i'll put it together for you!
