Organic food really is better for you

ORGANIC FOOD REALLY is healthier than standard produce and could be stopping cancer and heart disease.

The biggest study of its kind, conducted by Professor Carlo Leifert at Newcastle University, found that fruit and vegetables grown without chemical fertilisers and pesticides have up to 40% more nutrients.

The findings contradict official advice by the Food Standards Agency who have been criticised for maintaining that organic produce is no more healthy than standard fare.

Organic milk was also found to contain 80% more antioxidants in the £12 million study and overall organic produce had higher levels of iron and zinc, key nutrients often lacking in many people's diets.

Professor Leifert explained that moving to eating organic vegetables was the equivalent of eating an extra portion of fruit or vegetables a day.

Leifert said: 'If you have just 20% more antioxidants in every portion of vegetables, then it's simply a question of maths - eating four portions of organic fruit and vegetables is the equivalent to eating five portions of traditional fruit and vegetables.'
