Eco-projects in running for £50 million lottery prize

AN X-FACTOR-STYLE television show has been created to decide which of four environmentally friendly schemes, will be awarded a £50million lottery prize.



The finalists were shortlisted from 33 schemes and include a new biome conservatory at the Eden Project in Cornwall, a strategy to treble the size of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, a Black Country 'urban park' in the West Midlands, and Sustrans, co-ordinator of the National Cycle Network, which hopes to build 79 projects across the UK to improve cycling and walking routes.



The four projects will be supported in separate programmes to be shown on ITV1 in December, with the winner taking home the massive £50million prize.



All 33 original projects will still benefit however, receiving £500,000 to work up their schemes.



Sir Clive Booth, head of the Big Lottery Fund, said that it was right that people who bought lottery tickets should have more say in deciding on the worthy causes.



The programmes about the finalists are expected to air in the week beginning 3 December with a decision announced the following week.
