Greenest cities in UK revealed

NEWPORT IN SOUTH Wales and Plymouth have been named the greenest cities in Britain following analysis of their ecological footprint.



Inhabitants in both cities require, on average, 5.01 hectares of the Earth's surface to meet their needs every year.



The British city with the worst carbon footprint came out as Winchester in the league, carried out by environmental consultancy, CarbonPlan. The city took an average of 6.52 hectares to deal with the requirements of each individual.



Factors considered included the use of transport, building and heating homes and clothing families as well as mobile phone usage and electricity used by household appliances such as televisions and dishwashers.



However the levels of consumption in even the greenest cities are still far too high said the WWF (formerly the World Wide Fund for Nature), which commissioned the research.



Colin Butfield of WWF said: 'We are depleting the Earth's natural resources quicker than it can replace them.'



He added: 'The battle for the environment will be won or lost in our cities. The have the highest potential for eco-living due to local facilities and public transport links.'
