CIGARETTE SALES DROP AFTER SMOKING BAN

Cigarette sales have fallen by 6.9% in the last month after the smoking ban was introduced in England and Wales.

Just over three billion cigarettes were bought in Britain in the four weeks to July 28, down on sales from last year, according to research group AC Nielsen.

The decline – which follows similar falls in Ireland and Scotland - was welcomed by anti-smoking campaigners.

'It's very encouraging,' said Amanda Sandford of the health campaign group ASH. 'We hope this is indicative of people taking steps to give up smoking altogether.'

Although British smokers are expected to consume 48 million cigarettes this year, Borders book store said that sales of anti-smoking books by Alan Carr and the hypnotist Paul McKenna have risen by almost 260% on average across their stores.
