Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a Twitter campaign to try and improve the welfare of Indian girls and highlight their importance in society. This is part of a bigger scheme called 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'’ (Save Daughters, Educate Daughters), which aims to promote gender equality and raise awareness of the declining number of girls in India. In an interview with news channel NDTV last year, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said, 'You have 2,000 girls who are killed in the womb every day.'

The idea for #SelfieWithDaughter came from a small village in Haryana, where they took selfies and sent them out via the messaging app WhatsApp. Haryana has one of the most skewed gender ratios in the country, with just 834 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six years old.

Thousands of people from all over the world have now joined in and tweeted #SelfieWithDaughter photos and it’s really heartwarming stuff. The Indian Prime Minister tweeted, 'Amazed by the fantastic response to #SelfieWithDaughter. Its remarkable how people across the world have chipped in.'
