Botox may soon be available on the NHS - but just for migraines.
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has given the green light to the use of botox, better know for being a cosmetic procedure, to treat chronic migraines in adults.
Recommending the treatment for the condition, NICE published the first draft of the new guidelines last week, after it requested more information and analysis on a public consultation in February.
In the new draft guidelines, NICE recommends Botox as a treatment option for chronic migraines in adults whose condition has not responded to taking at least three prior preventative medications.
'Chronic migraines are extremely debilitating and can significantly affect a person's quality of life,' says Professor Carole Longson, from NICE.
If final guidance gets the go-ahead it will be published in June 2012. Around 700,000 people in the UK suffer from chronic migraines.
