The contraceptive patch could increase the risk of blood clots by eight times, according to findings published in the British Medical Journal.

The skin patch continuously releases hormones into the body to prevent pregnancy but a review of data at the University of Copenhagen found almost 10 blood clots per 10,000 women per year in women using the device.

The risk for women using the contraceptive Pill is just over six per 10,000 women developing a blood clot.

Around one per cent of women attending contraceptive clinics in England opt for the skin patch, while 42 per cent of women choose the Pill.
