Obesity experts claim eating eggs for breakfast could help you lose weight as well as stave off hunger pangs.

Going to work on an egg, as the 1950s advertising campaign stated, will keep you fuller for longer because of the high protein content but this could also increase our diet success.

Researchers at the Pennington Biomedical Research Centre in Louisiana found those who had eaten an egg for breakfast have lower levels of the appetite stimulating hormone ghrelin in their blood three hours later.

'This study shows that diets with higher protein quality may enhance satiety, leading to better compliance and success of a weight loss diet,' says Dr Nikhil Dhurandhar.

Tracy Parker, from the British Heart Foundation says: 'This finding could help people who are trying to lose weight or stop snacking.'

However, Ms Parker emphasises the importance of trying boiling or poaching when cooking eggs rather than frying or adding butter, to receive the full health benefits.
