Wi-fi could damage sperm count

Using laptops could put men's sperm count at risk - and jeopardise their chances of fatherhood - says new research.

The study, from the Nascentis Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Cordoba, Argentina and the Eastern Virginia Medical School, claims sperm placed next to a wif-fi connected laptop becomes less mobile, with a quarter likely to die within a few hours.

In comparison, sperm stored at the same temperature but away from the laptop showed a smaller drop in mobility.

Experts suggest the findings, published in the Fertility and Sterility journal, are caused by electromagnetic radiation emitted by wireless communication.

'Our data suggests that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality,' says study leader Dr Conrado Avendano.

'At present we do not know whether this effect is induced by all laptop computers connected by wi-fi to the internet or what use conditions heighten the effect.'
