Who's for a strawberry martini? New research suggests that the summery red berries may minimise the damage caused by alcohol by protecting the stomach lining.

Scientists from the University of Barcelona studied the effect of strawberries in combination with alcohol and found some surprising results.

The study looked at the effect of alcohol on rats and discovered that those given strawberry extract had fewer stomach ulcers than rats that weren't given strawberries.

The authors of the study now believe that the antioxidant compounds found within strawberries could be the key to improving treatments for stomach ulcers.

Researcher Sara Tulipani, of the University of Barcelona, said: ‘The positive effects of strawberries are not only linked to their antioxidant capacity, but also to the fact that they activate the antioxidant defences and enzymes of the body.’

We'll toast our daiquiri's to that!
