Website launched for those who can’t have sex
By Hannah Thomas on Monday 15 August 2011
Cancer survivor Laura Brashier has created a new website aimed towards people who cannot have sex because of disability caused by the disease.
2date4love was launched at the beginning of this month off the back of Laura’s own personal frustrations having been treated for stage 4 cervical cancer when she was 37. The-50 year-old hairstylist from California is now unable to have sex without pain.
Ms Brashier told the Orange County Register that an inability to have sex does not lessen the human need for love and romance. ‘Once you take sex out of it, people are still looking for compassion,’ she says.
Since her treatment, Ms Brashier says she has had trouble dating men because she doesn’t want to broach the subject of sex, but says she still craves the companionship and intimacy of a partner.
‘It’s about finding someone to share your sacred space with to have someone in your life where it’s you against the world.’
Dr. Ilana Cass of the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute in LA says problems with intimacy after cancer are very common. According to the National Cancer Institute, some women experience premature menopause and a lower sex drive, while men may face erectile dysfunction.
Ms Brashier hopes that 2date4love will encourage people with this shared commonality to be open to the possibility of finding love and happiness by taking the emphasis of sex.
