Cheryl Cole, Jennifer Aniston and Lady Gaga are just a few of the stars rumoured to swear by 'the baby food diet' and sales are now surging in Britain as women take their lead from Hollywood.

Sales of wet baby food have risen by 20 per cent compared to last year, with sales of dry baby food rocketing by 59 per cent, according to the web grocer, Ocado. Heinz Mum’s Own Creamed Porridge sales have doubled and Spaghetti purees are up 87 per cent.

The diet consists of 14 small portions of pureed food per day followed by a normal dinner but has been criticised by nutritionists. ‘The reason it’s called baby food is because it’s for babies,’ says nutritional therapist, Janine Fahri. ‘I’m an advocate of eating little and often, but 14 times a day?’

Women trying to slim down for their summer holiday bikinis are said to be driving the sales trend. Advocates of the diet believe it is possible to lose up to 20lb in six weeks when combined with regular exercise.

Pots and packets of baby food often contain between 100 and 150 calories, as well as being subject to strict nutrition controls, limiting salt, sugar and other additives.

Personal trainer, Tracy Anderson, is credited as the diet’s creator and is recognized for sculpting the figures of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.
