Walnuts named the healthiest nut

If your going to snack on nuts, then make sure there are walnuts in the mix, scientists suggest.

In a new study by researchers from Pennsylvania, antioxidant levels were analysed for nine types of nut, which found a handful of walnuts to have double the antioxidants of other common nuts.

Although nuts are known for their nutritional value, the study placed walnuts above peanuts, almonds, pecans and pistachios for health benefits.

Not only were there more antioxidants, those present were better in quality and potency.

Dr Vinson, who led the study, also stated that walnuts were deemed the healthier choice as they were commonly eaten raw: 'The heat from roasting nuts generally reduces the quality of the antioxidants. People usually eat walnuts raw or unroasted, and get the full effectiveness of those antioxidants.'

Studies have shown that eating nuts can protect against heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Walnuts have long been considered one of the best options, thanks to their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, known to help the cardiovascular system.
