Mooncup urges women to ‘Love their vaginas'
By Lucy Halfhead on Thursday 18 March 2010
A controversial and fun new advertising campaign by innovative company Mooncup features posters all over the UK and the underground with different names women have for their vaginas - fru-fru, bajingo, coochie, lady garden and vajay-jay.
It is part of a drive to highlight a third alternative in sanitary protection - one they say offers health and environmental benefits over tampons and pads.
One woman will use at least 11,000 throwaway tampons and pads in her lifetime. The majority are flushed, blocking sewage systems or ending up in the sea. The rest are binned and go to landfill.
Mooncup intend to stimulate debate and encourage women to care about their vaginal health as much as they care for their hair, nails and make up. Kath Clements, Campaigns Manager for Mooncup, says: ‘We hope the ads will get women thinking, smiling and talking about their vaginas.'
Mooncups are ecofriendly, cost effective menstruation cups made from medical grade silicone and contain no dyes, bleaches or pesticides. Unlike other sanitary products, they leave no fibres behind.
Mooncup was launched by Brighton entrepreneur Su Hardy in 2002 and is now stocked in Boots, as well as independent health food stores and through the mooncup.co.uk website.

Mooncup was one of the first menstrual cups I bought, and remains one of my favourite brands, but it disappoints me that so much emphasis is put on them being 'green' - yes it's a benefit, but it's only one of many benefits and it tends to make people think they're only for 'hippies'.
Menstrual cups are also good as they're FAR more hygienic and healthier than tampons, that's the big plus here and why the new advertising talks about being kind to your vagina.
Due to this it means they can be worn for 12 hours without health risk or leaking, from light to heavy flow, overnight, even before your periods, and you don't have to alternate with pads as you do with tampons. This makes them MUCH more convenient and reliable than tampons or pads, not to mention that cups can also help lessen cramps!
...a happier period equals a happier vajayjay!

I suspect that it will take a long while to convince bewildered women and teenies to use this..as women have become used to the put on and chuck away ease of tampons etc..without the washing and cleansing of the cup ...and I suspect its a bit more awkward..if I have it right..? It will need a lot of publicity to commend this from the right parties on tele and mags..and the young mags not just the older women ones...
I have always wondered what past century women did re menstrual protection right back ..makes u wonder. I hope this will be 'put in its right place' in order to give women a good choice of what to use...its fascinating.

...ps..I believe that in the distant past ..didnt some women have to wash fabric and reuse it?? Well...I dont know....some women find the cap hard work so hope this works..I am intrigued...some women find tampons difficult to use..or dont like them.

I've had my mooncup two months and it's been a revelation! my period's no longer feel 'dirty', I don't have to worry about it at all, and only wish I'd known about it sooner. I've only ever heard good things from people who have one...truly great product
