Big boom in male plastic surgery
Rex Features
It's been a tough year for almost every UK industry, except for one... Despite the painful snap of the credit crunch, plastic surgery has experienced a surprise boom in Britain, particularly among men.
According to new figures released by the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), a remarkable 3,623 men went under the knife last year - that's a 21% rise from 2008.
Out of all the treatments available to men, breast surgery - dubbed the moob job - has proven most popular, with a staggering 80% increase, making it the third most popular procedure.
Close on it's tail is the rhinoplasty (nose job) and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
Of course, women still dominate the plastic surgery market having chalked up an impressive 32,193 operations in 2009 - a rise of 5.4% - with boob jobs remaining the most popular.
BAAPS president, consultant plastic surgeon Mr Nigel Mercer, says: ‘The public's interest in aesthetic surgery appears to remain strong and continues to grow quite considerably among UK males, despite the economic downturn.
‘Heightened media attention has allowed men to realise the positive outcomes that can be achieved.
‘The continued popularity of brow-lifts and eyelid surgery may mean patients, still keen to have rejuvenating treatments despite the recession, are choosing more cost-effective measures targeting one particular feature rather than having a whole facelift.'
