Going grey? Blame your parents

Women who blame stress for their grey hairs have got it wrong. New research shows that genes are responsible for when, and how quickly, a woman loses her hair colour.

A study of more than 200 twin sisters in Denmark found that identical siblings turned grey at almost the same time. Non-identical twins – who don't share the same genes – lost their natural hair colour at a different rate.

The way that hair thins, however, is related to environmental and lifestyle factors, reports the BBC.

The study was carried out by scientists from Unilever. Lead researcher, Dr David Gunn, said, 'This study offers us a fascinating insight into the reason why women go grey and it certainly suggests that environmental factors are not as important as we once thought.

'The research indicates that irrespective of how stressful a woman's life is, there are greater forces at play which are more likely to cause her hair to grey.'
