Tomatoes ‘stop you getting fat'
By Lucy Halfhead on Wednesday 4 November 2009
New research has revealed that a diet rich in tomatoes may help people lose weight.
Tomatoes are rich in the compound lycopene, which scientists believe may help to make people feel more full by lowering appetite hormones.
Researchers from the University of Reading made their discovery after testing bread enriched with tomato on 17 people aged 18-35. They found that compared to normal bread, and bread enriched with carrots, the tomato bread was actually the most filling.
‘It was a small study, and we can't yet say what the crucial tomato ingredient is, but the results were statistically significant,' said Dr Julie Lovegrove, a specialist in nutritional metabolism who is leading the project.
According to the Telegraph, the lycopene found in tomatoes makes them red and is a key component of the Mediterranean diet which is credited with lowering rates of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and some forms of cancer.
Dr Lovegrove believes it may too be the reason why the volunteers felt more full.

For me, I have lost some weight whenever I eat my main meal of the day before 4pm. Additionally, if I do this & avoid carbs, I lose even more weight. I think carbs are the biggest culprit for weight gain. Carbs are the enemy!!
