High street pizzas loaded with fat

Some popular pizzas from leading high street chains contain more than three-quarters of a woman's daily allowance for saturated fat, a report has shown.
 
Which?, the consumer watchdog, investigated Margherita pizzas - a basic cheese and tomato recipe - at the leading high street chains, and found most were very unhealthy, full of high levels of salt, fat and saturated fat.

The Prezzo version contained 15.35g of saturated fat, 77 per cent of the 20g that the Food Standards Agency suggest women should eat each day, while the Pizza Hut one contained 13.99g of saturated fat.
 
All of them contained at least 3g of salt, half the recommended amount for both men and women, with Zizzi's Margherita containing 4.05g, more than 80pc the recommended amount for a ten-year-old boy.

The Pizza Express pizza was the only one to have less than 20g of fat and less than 10g of saturated fat. This is of the most dangerous forms of fat associated with higher cholesterol, which can lead to a raised risk of heart disease and strokes.

Which? editor Martyn Hocking said: ‘You'd expect pizza to be high in fat - any meal with that much cheese would be. But the fact that Pizza Express was the reviewers' favourite and its pizzas were the lowest in fat shows that pizzas don't have to overload on grease to taste great.'
