Public think models are too thin
By Elizabeth Heathcote on Monday 14 September 2009
Almost two-thirds of Britons believe that models are too thin, according to a poll by Metro.
Six out of 10 respondents believe that young people may be influenced by too-thin models, and only 4 per cent believe that models are "healthy".
Almost half believe that very thin models glamorise eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. And only 7% of British adults think that models are an 'appropriate weight'.
'The aesthetic has become so narrow - you have to be as young and tall and thin as possible if you're going to be beautiful,' said Susan Ringwood, chief executive of the eating disorder charity beat.
'We have spoken to young people who have recovered from anorexia and they were very clear it wasn't fashion models who made them ill in the first place,' added Ms Ringwood. 'But they said seeing images of very thin models did make it much more difficult to recover from their illness.'
