Brocco Shoots the new superfood
By Lucy Halfhead on Tuesday 14 July 2009
A health food brand has come up with a new superfood called Brocco Shoots which it claims helps to fight cancer.
Brocco Shoots are a unique blend of broccoli, alfalfa, clover and radish sprouts, which are crunchy to eat, have a delicate spicy flavour and contain an abundance of nutrients, such as concentrated amounts of a powerful chemo-protective compound called sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS).
The shoots are packed with anti-oxidants and even richer in cancer protective compounds than adult broccoli heads.
SGS is a naturally occurring plant compound found in Brocco Shoots and when broken down to its active form sulforaphane, acts as a long-lasting antioxidant that detoxifies carcinogens in the body. This makes broccoli sprouts one of the most potent food based anti-carcinogens available.
Amazingly, Brocco Shoots contain up to 50 times more sulforaphane than adult broccoli heads. Along with providing proven protection against cancer, a regular intake of sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts has also been shown to help prevent a range of other conditions including ulcers, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Alfalfa shoots contain plant chemicals that have powerful anti-inflammatory and cancer protective properties. They are also rich in a compound called saponin that lowers bad cholesterol and helps stimulate the immune system by increasing the activity of natural killer cells.
