The average father-to-be puts on a stone in weight during their partner's pregnancy, it was revealed yesterday.

A quarter have to buy a 'paternity' wardrobe to accommodate their growing frame as they tuck into larger portions and tempting treats. A fifth said their partner started to feed them larger meals, while 41% said more snacks 'appeared' in the house.

Favourite 'male pregnancy' snacks included pizza, chocolate and crisps. Many also admitted to regularly drinking beer.

The survey of 5,000 men, conducted by www.onepoll.com, revealed the habits added at least two inches to their waistlines.

42% of couples spent more time visiting pubs and restaurants for dinner, to make the most of their time together before the birth. A fifth of expectant fathers only realised they had put on weight when their clothes stopped fitting.

After the baby was born, 31% joined their partners on a post-pregnancy diet.

A spokesman for Onepoll said: 'The average woman puts on about two and a half stone during her pregnancy, and it's not at all uncommon for her to crave more fatty foods and need more regular snacks.

'So if the kitchen cupboards are suddenly brimming with snacks and food, it's no wonder blokes are tempted to tuck in as well.

'The only problem seems to be that men are choosing to snack on unhealthier options such as sweets and cakes - and I don't think women can be blamed for their partners drinking more beer!'
