£55 manuka honey 'has healing properties'
By Elizabeth Heathcote on Tuesday 19 May 2009
Britain's only manuka honey, produced on the Tregothnan estate in Cornwall, is selling for an estimated £5 per teaspoon.
The first batch of 100 jars of the honey, which is said to have health-giving properties, sold out through Harvey Nichols at £55 for a small pot. Its benefits are said to include relief for gum disease, sore throats, acne, sun burn and digestive problems, according to the Guardian.
Women are keen consumers.
The estate's bees are housed in airy designer hives with direct access to the manuka (tea tree) bushes. Manuka bushes are native to New Zealand and Australia.

Manuka honey is anti-bacterial, and I regularly use it to help cure sore throats and colds, even recently using it to cure my dog's kennel cough! However, you can get some from the supermarket for a lot less than £55 a pot!

Who has tested this stuff to make sure that it has all the "ANTI'S" that is claimed. I love Manuka and for some weird twist of nature, having a name like Christina Honey, deemed me a honey lover from birth. I know so many people who have been cured and mended using manuka honey from NZ, that was proven and tested. As consumers WE ARE SICK of beiong duped. If this is the real McCoy.....show us what your're made of.

Great to see enterprising spirit in Britain. However, all Manuka honey is not equal (all Manuka honey from NZ has to be tested for its activity in an accredited lab test) You might as well buy table honey if you buy less than UMF 10+.
I buy Green Bay because I know it is unpastuerised and always organic guaranteeing a quality product.

Its funny - they got the headlines because of the price - but is it actually any good? Not all manuka honey is the same. Only some of it is able to pass the simple scientific test to show if it actually contains any antibacterial properties or not. Considering that even a jar of the top proven antibacterial manuka honey (UMF 25+) is available for £34, then this just seems a complete rip off, with no antibacterial level provided.
The UMF (an industry standard for all the genuine brands) rated manuka honey undergoes an independent test of its antibacterial potency, with those results and labelling further independently audited. Its amazing how there seems to be more manuka honey sold in the UK than what is actually produced in New Zealand, let alone considering the other countries where it is sold to.
Its the old 'buyer beware'!
