New wristbands stop sunburn

Painful sunburn could soon be a thing of the past. Scientists have come up with a new wristband that you can wear on the beach that turns pink when you’re in danger of burning your skin.
 
Researchers in Scotland spent more than £50,000 developing the bracelet-style product over the past year, which could be on the market in a couple of months.
 
The band works when UV rays react to chemicals inside the material, which causes them to change from a yellow to a pink colour.
 
Professor Andrew Mills, part of the research team from the University of Strathclyde, said the UV-driven reaction with the dye acts as an ‘intelligent ink’.
 
‘As soon as the indicator turns pink, you should get out of the sun because if you stay you'll burn.’
 
He added that the team plans to start a company that will make products out of the technology, such as wristbands or clothing labels.
 
Another member of the team, doctor Mike McFarlen, added that they believe this is just the beginning. 'Now that we've come up with this, we're pretty sure we'll be able to develop more indicators that let you know, for example, when you have bad breath.’
